Useful Links

Angiosperm Phylogeny Website - excellent reference for systematics of plant families.
BONAP (The Biota of North America Program, North American Vascular Flora) - excellent source of distribution maps for taxa extending beyond New England, density gradient maps for North America, and various additional information.
Brown University Digital Repository for Herbarium - very good source for images of herbarium specimens at this institution.
Catalog of New World Grasses - excellent reference for nomenclature of grasses of the western hemisphere.
Chromosome Counts Database - excellent reference for chromosome counts.
CNH Portal (Consortium of Northeastern Herbaria) - extensive source for images of herbarium specimens in herbaria of northeastern North Anerica with particularly good representation of specimens from New England. However, errors in geographic location and species identification in the database are not uncommon, and, unfortunately, information and images of a large number of locally rare or occasional native species are suppressed.
Flora of North America - online access to the treatments in the published volumes of the Flora of North America project. To reach a given species treatment click first on the family, then scroll down to end of key/s for family and click on "List of lower taxa" to get list of genera in family, then choose genus and scroll down to end of key/s and click on "List of lower taxa" to bring up list of species in genus. Excellent reference for keys, nomenclature, plant description, habitat, distributions by state and chromosome numbers.
Go Botany - keys to New England vascular plants with New England county map distribution, habitat, plant images, character notes, conservation status.
Grass Manual on the Web - very good reference for grasses of North America, including description, keys, illustrations, nomenclature and chromosome numbers.
Harvard University Herbaria Index to Botanical Specimens - access to database of a large number of the herbarium specimens at the Harvard University Herbaria, with a particularly large proportion of the specimens of the New England Botanical Club and the New England specimens owned by Harvard University (GH, A, ECON, AMES), many with images of the specimen.
International Plant Names Index - excellent reference for authorship of plant names.
New York Botanical Garden Virtual Herbarium - good source for data for many but not all specimens at this institution, some with images.
Tropicos - very good reference for authorship of plant names, and some chromosome information.
U.S. National Plant Germplasm System (GRIN) - good reference for world distribution of many plants, common names, and authorship of plant names.
University of Connecticut Herbarium Specimen Database - excellent source of high resolution images of herbarium specimens at this institution. Unfortunately images and information for locally rare or occasional native species are suppressed.
University of Maine Herbaria Vascular Plant Database - good database for the plant specimens at this institution. However, habitat and locality information is missing for many specimens, and no images are provided, although low resolution images of some of the specimens are available at the CNH Portal listed above.
Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History Plant Specimen Database - very good source for images of herbarium specimens at Yale University including specimens of the Connecticut Botanical Society.
